Cell Mass N2 is a gallery adaptation of the public art work Spine and is projected at large-scale with surround-sound, creating an immersive experience for the viewer.
Developed from material filmed for the artist’s award-winning audiovisual work Nascent, Cell Mass N2 takes raw footage of improvised and choreographed performance by Australian Dance Theatre, to which Czarnecki applied digital compositional techniques in the editing stage. The result is a powerful and compelling hybrid of visual art, experimental media, technology and dance.
The imagery of Cell Mass N2 evolves from complex masses of cell-like structures, to graceful friezes of bodies whose movement is distorted in time, creating tableaux both breathtaking in beauty and rich in texture. Eventually, the intertwined bodies resemble a new life form, observed like a biological sample, in flux, multiplying, mutating.
As in Nascent and Spine, a specially commissioned soundtrack composed by acclaimed Austrian electronic artist Christian Fennesz accompanies the work.
