There's Gold in that Grass
Mack Quicke
Screened at FormaHQ as part of the AFI'24 Associate Screening Programme

The film is told from the perspective of fans of a South London football club and the players of a North London one and explores how football can act as a sacred space where people find community and solidarity by being involved within it. The piece aims to articulate how these communities foster intensely personal relationships through the club, and how sport has helped the people in the film find commonality through that.

The different clubs were carefully selected as ones that act as vehicles for social change within their community, with everything from education to finding a sense of belonging within the world. Football's visual aesthetic is very well established, however, the film is trying to challenge its traditional visual representation, from things such as incorporating pastel colours to close-up details.

There's Gold in that Grass is screening as part of the Artists' Film International 2024 Associate Screening Programme at FormaHQ until 26 October.
