New Contemporaries Studio Residency at FormaHQ

James Jordan Johnson was born and lives in London and graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2025. Working in performance, film and photography he is interested in the spiritual state of witnessing and how it can allow for reconsidering truth as a means of relativity when the everyday is observed and recalled. Grounding his work in Caribbean articulations of material and ecological belief systems, he believes pre-existing or self-established methods of opacity can inform our understanding of cultural articulations within culture making.

James was awarded the New Contemporaries Studio Residency at FormaHQ in October 2025.

James says:

I am really excited to spend the next year developing a studio based practice at Forma and to continue to explore my approach to film.

The New Contemporaries Studio Residency at FormaHQ comprises of a fully funded studio space for 12 months in Bermondsey, London between October 2025 and September 2026, dedicated curatorial and communications support from both New Contemporaries and Forma, as well as access to Forma’s AV equipment and bookable spaces.
