Join Montez editor Hasti on Tuesday 14th July from 2-3.30pm for a creative writing workshop exploring responses to the sculpture Slow Crush by Jala Wahid in Peveril Gardens, as part of our jointly curated season of programming with Forma.
Wahid’s large-scale sculpture revivifies the remains of the ‘Hasanlu Lovers’ — two ancient male skeletons who held onto each other tenderly in the face of violent death. Installed for a full year within Peveril Gardens, Slow Crush examines how histories are named, claimed, and politicised in the present. Responding to its site, the sculpture emerges from the earth as an ode to the layered histories of diaspora, migration, displacement and queer resilience.
In this workshop, we'll explore relationships to ancestry, land and love, excavating our own stories and finding beauty in things not yet unearthed.
Writing materials with be provided, as well as some snacks and soft drinks. Please let us know in advance if you have any food allergies.
This is a community-focused event welcoming all experience levels. Please note that there are stairs up to the garden. Tickets are free but booking is essential.
